Far from checking the spread of immorality, repression has always extended and deepended it. Thus it is futile to oppose it by rigorous legislation which trespasses on individual liberty.

About This Quote

When the French Revolution broke out in 1789, the leaders in charge in Paris were attempting to make France a more moral country. But, instead of helping to stop immorality, these laws actually made it worse. The government was forcing people to act against their conscience and judgment. This led to an increase in crime and violence.

Along with this trend, freedom of speech was also under attack. Anyone who spoke against the government was locked up for years or even executed. They did this because they thought that freedom of speech made people more immoral.

However, what they failed to understand is that freedom of speech actually makes people more moral by making them think before they act.
